Man Utd agree deal for 6 ft 3 in defensive midfielder, official confirmation expected later this month – originally posted on Soccerlens.com
Manchester United have agreed on a new long-term contract with the young Netherlands defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
The 18-year-old is out of contract in the summer and ESPN are reporting that the club and the player have an agreement which should be signed after the international break is over. Apparently, the Premier League side were in talks with the player and his representatives over the last few weeks.
The Netherlands youth international broke into Louis Van Gaal’s first team plans last season and has not looked back since then. The 190.5 cm (6’3″) star is currently a backup to Antonio Valencia at right back and is ahead of the Italian international Matteo Darmian in the pecking order. Fosu-Mensah can play as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder as well.
The young Dutch footballer has made 10 appearances for the Red Devils last season and has made two appearances in the EFL Cup and Europa League so far this season. ESPN add that the player is highly rated by Jose Mourinho, and therefore the Old Trafford giants have decided to reward him for his progress with improved new terms and secure his long-term future.
Fosu-Mensah is one of the best young players at the club and is expected to a big part of Manchester United’s future alongside the likes of Marcus Rashford, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, and other talented young academy graduates.
