Marquez finished ahead of Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso with Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales rounding out the podium.

Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were the only riders who could have denied him the title. Both Yamaha riders crashed out; Rossi early in the race, Lorenzo in the closing laps.

Rossi was recovering from a slow start from pole position when he crashed out of second place at Turn 10, ending his title hopes.

Lorenzo only needed to finish second to keep the title alive to next weekend’s race at Phillip Island, but he too crashed out with five laps to go.

At 23-years old, Marquez is now the youngest ever rider to win three premier-class World Championship titles and five World Championships over all classes during a period of only nine years of World Championship racing.

Marquez has now equalled Mick Doohan, Jorge Lorenzo and Toni Mang’s tally of 5 World Titles in his career.
