Mystery is surrounding the succession of Thailand’s playboy Crown Prince after he said he wants to delay becoming king just hours after the death of his father. Heartbroken Thais are mourning the death of their beloved King Bhumibol who died today in hospital in Bangkok at the age of 88.
Government officials say there will be a one-year mourning period, with all entertainment functions being ‘toned down’ for 30 days.
His death means that Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has now become the world’s longest reigning monarch.
However, she is unlikely to acknowledge such a record, particularly as the Thai people are grieving for their revered head of state, who came to the throne in 1946.
